Fun-A-Day in a Not-So-Fun Time
Before getting to any official latchkey business, I’d like to extend an invitation to the Hudson Valley Fun-A-Day show on Saturday.
In January, over thirty Hudson Valley residents made something each day for the whole month. Media includes crochet, video, fabric, paper bags, illustration, photography, collage, and more. It is my absolute favorite art show of the year because EVERYONE is invited to participate! No gatekeepers! No juries or judges, just pure art, ingenuity, community, and silliness.
This year, I have kept most of what I made under wraps, but I posted a few images on Instagram as a teaser. The short and long of it is that I mixed heartache and sorrow in a blender with collage supplies, Julie Novak, and a mint-condition 1981 JCPenney catalog.
The Opening Party is March 8 from 6 to 8 pm at The DRAW, 22 Iwo Jima Lane, Kingston, NY. Masks are required. I hope to see you!
Featured artists are: Amy Myslik, Cal Patch, Carrie Schapker, Chris Pryslopski, Mary Lofgren, Megan Gould, Jacinta Bunnell, Jem Altieri, Jess Davis, James D Saul, Geri Lofgren, Kyle Burt, Damien King, Lance Cushman, Lauren Hirsch, Leigh Dodson, Lora Shelley, Mirabai Gould, Molly & Ruby, Tona Wilson, Daniel Lofgren, Alyssa Toohey, Paul Soule, Sharon Wasko, Rebecca Cosgrove, Rebecca Pisciotta, Rita Bolla, Joaquin & Zephyr, Heidi Abrams-Pleva, Jojo & Gia, Zoya Geacintov, Denise Orzo, and Beth Humphrey.
AND NOW HERE IS SOME CCORRESPONDENCE FROM LATCHKEY TOWNSHIP BY A WRITER NAMED KRIS, WHO WOULD LIKE TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS.
BAD THINGS HAPPEN
Latchkey kids sometimes lock themselves out of the house. Instead of asking for help, we built a fort.
Sometimes, latchkey kids get bit by dogs walking home from school. I didn't know what to do for my younger sister, who was bit and crying, so I tried to make her laugh by getting out my snow sled out of season and throwing paper-wad snowballs.
Saltines and peanut butter sandwiches were the snacks of choice after school. The noises of the boiler in the house sounded like ghosts. People laughing and talking.
I want to give my younger self a hug.
Much gratitude to Kris, who perhaps summons the spirit and pluckishness of what we all need to get through turbulent times.
In January, when I was supposed to be working on my Fun-A-Day project, I distracted myself by learning a new and practical skill. I created some rough-and-ready videos while trying to understand the complexities of a video-editing program. You can see them all here.
